Wait, More Undead?

Episode 2 - Fire, Flood, Dirt and Tornado

The Third Day of the Melting continued.

“We should probably expect more encounters,” Jonathan looked back at Sasha’s injuries. Sasha nodded. When Jonathan approached the cavern ahead of them, he was startled by a box that fell and shattered on the ground beside him. He swung around, as to look at the other Swiftarrows, but also up. “There is a ledge above me!” With that, two, obviously dead, people fell from the air above him and landed prone beside him.

Two Zombies fall 10 feet, and 5 is rolled for damage.

“Well, everything can be solved with fire, Fyr Mæðel!” And Carolyn unleashed a firebolt, grazing one of the zombies.

Initiative 20, Attack roll: 10, Damage 1

“Clearly everything.” Sasha ran twenty or so paces and released an arrow at the zombie on her right. “HEAD SHOTS ONLY!” As the arrow pierces an eye, the zombie collapsed.

Initiative 18, Attack Roll: 25 (natural 20), Damage  11

“Got it,” Grump responded as he strolled up and smashed the last zombie’s chest, making it stutter step as it lunged at Jonathan.

Initiative 12, Attack Roll 11, Damage 5

“Got it.” Jonathan lunged, and his rapier pierced the mouth of the zombie, passing through the palate into the head, and the final zombie fell.

Initiative 6, Attack Roll 24 (natural 20), Damage 7

“Where did all of these corpses come from?” Sasha asked, “would a small town like Red Lurch start to notice if three people went missing.

“Could be travelers,” Jonathan noted.

“Adventurers, like us,” Grump said while he riffled the pockets, “maybe this is a profit business. Send the adventurers here, kill them, and take their stuff. I mean, these guys had nothing on them, not even a handful of coins.”

The cavern opened, with passages to the left and the right, and a large rock covered in a brown pigment or stain.

“It appears to be blood,” Sasha said as she examined the rock.

“Well, they didn’t even have that.” Grump retorted.

“True, I guess.” Sasha seemed disturbed by this.

“But this closes it; something wrong is going on here, and there is no good reason to let it keep going on. We need to keep going until we find whatever treasure is down here.” Grump pontificated, as everyone turned in surprise. “Er, what evil is here, and clear it.”

“Well, we can go left or right, not sure what directions those are, but those are our choices.” Jonathan broke the awkwardness.

“I say east, er right. Judging from the shape of the hill we saw on the outside, it can’t go far. Unless there is a ramp or stairs. And I am not feeling any stairs.”

Grump used Stonecunning here.

Jonathan, “okay. Of course, I will keep the point. Everyone else stay back, but let’s keep everyone in view, so I guess you need to keep your lantern out, Sasha.”

“It seems like there is only this cavern beyond, and it is full of more corpses. But none seem to be moving.” Jonathan called back after moving into a dead-end cavern around the corner.

“Well, let’s check them out,” Grump advised. And when Sasha stared at him, “for identifying papers or things, not coins.” Sasha sighed.

“I suppose, but I am going keep an eye behind us,” Jonathan responded.

“Some of these skeletons seem like warriors; they have weapons,” Sasha noted.

“Wait warr…” Jonathan said as a skeleton beside him stood and swung a sword at him.

Initiative 21, Attack Roll 9

“Aiee, yep, looks like new and more undead,” Jonathan drew his rapier and swung it at the neck of the skeleton that attacked him, neatly decapitating it, but failing to prevent it from continuing to attack.

Initiative 20, Attack Roll 24 (natural 20), Damage 8

“What force prevents the dead from rising…” Grump asked as he slammed a skeleton that was rising beside him with his hammer; the skeleton shattered from the Warhammer blow.

Initiative 15, Attack Roll 23, Damage 7, but the skeleton is vulnerable to bludgeoning.

“Hey, watch that,” Sasha screamed as a skeleton attempted to stab her.

Initiative 12, Attack Roll 10

Sasha quickly riposted into the empty ribcage, “.. or this.”

Initiative 10, Attack Roll 21, Damage 5

Carolyn started to cast, “Slege dēað,” True Strike on her staff, to strike at the skeleton, which shattered. “There you are!”

Initiative 8, Attack Roll 15, Damage 8, but the skeleton is vulnerable to bludgeoning.

Jonathan lunged to the skeleton beside Sasha, “ha!” And hacks it down with his rapier.

Initiative 20, Attack Roll 18, Damage 10

“..from sleep.” Grump finished. “Well, I guess this does. ‘What Force’ is as good as any other name for a hammer. We must continue and give these souls the rest they need.”

“Actually, the souls of these undead are free and can …” Carolyn interjected.

“Really, elf lady? This is the debate? It is time to head back to the west and end this.”
